Spike Island at Haulbowline Island

Photographs © John H. Luxton 2006

SPIKE ISLAND is a former Landing Craft, evidence of her previous port of registry Southampton can be seen beneath the paintwork as can her previous name which appears to be LCU 3508, She is seen here in the Dockyard at Haulbowline Island, Cóbh on July 27, 2006. The background the rapidly disappearing former Irish Steel plant can be made out. She is used to occasionally ferry vehicles to Spike Island which until a couple of years ago operated as a prison. There are plans to reopen the prison but it will be linked by a bridge.
