Cross River Ferries Ltd are based in County Cork. The company is jointly owned by Marine Transport Services of
Cóbh and Arklow Shipping Ltd of Arklow.
The company operates a short 4 minute crossing across the River Lee from Carrigaloe on Great Island near
Cóbh to Glenbrook. The vehicle ferry service commenced operations in 1993 and has been a great success providing a useful shortcut and avoiding the heavy traffic in and around nearby Cork City. A passenger ferry used to operate on the route until earlier this century.
Two vessels are used on the route the CARRIGALOE and GLENBROOK. Originally built for Caledonian
Steam Packet Company [later Caledonian MacBrayne] for the Kyle of Lochalsh to Kyleakin route where they operated as the
KYLEAKIN and LOCHALSH until replaced by new tonnage in 1991. They were then sold to Cross River Ferries and entered service in 1993.
From Summer 2002 to Spring 2003, CARRIGALOE was chartered to the Lough Foyle Ferry
Company in the North of Ireland.
