Vanguard - A Tribute

It is sometime since a Mersey based ship has been wrecked. Unfortunately on the evening of September 07, the well known Merseyside based tug VANGUARD operated by the Carmet Tug Company was reported to be taking on water whilst operating in support of an Upholder class submarine undergoing trials prior to delivery to the Canadian Navy. VANGUARD was beached on the Island of Rona. Unfortunately she rolled onto her side and is likely to be a total loss. By way of a tribute here are a selection of photographs of this smart little vessel taken over the past few years.

On Tuesday September 07, the Birkenhead based tug VANGUARD was beached on the Island of Rona off Skye. VANGUARD was contracted to BAe Systems and operating in support for one of the former Royal Navy Upholder Class submarines currently process of being sold to the Canadian Navy

She came to rest on her side in an area of shallow water and jagged rocks. Salvage firm Titan Marine has been awarded the contract to remove the tug.

Originally built as the RATHGARTH for Rea Tugs in 1965 she was subsequently renamed CAMPAIGNER in 1977 when she worked on the Clyde. In 1988 she was renamed KENRY and transferred to Irish Tugs. In 1991 she was saved from the scrap yard and entered the Merseyside based Carmet fleet.
