Bibby Sapphire at the Old Bibby Line Berth

Photographs © John H. Luxton 2006

BIBBY SAPPHIRE rests in the West Float Birkenhead on December 16, 2006; after completion of work which saw the vessel equipped with diving support capability by Northwestern Shiprepairers at Birkenhead during 2006.

There is a certain significance to where the BIBBY SAPPHIRE is berthed. It is actually the old Bibby Line berth that was used for several decades for their services to Port Said, Port Sudan, Colombo and Rangoon.

The last Bibby "Burma Boat" GLOUCESTERSHIRE loaded at that berth in 1971 and then took the companies last sailing which had been the mainstay of Bibby Line operations for over eighty years. Consequently, it is 35 years since a Bibby Line vessel berthed at that quay.

Further details will be found in a new book "Birkenhead and Birkenhead Docks" by Ian Collard due to be published early in 2007.
