Scillonian III Arrives at Penzance

Photographs © Chris Jones 2006

SCILLONIAN III reflects the sunlight on a fine spring evening as this classic British passenger-cargo ship, one of the last of her kind, arrives at the Lighthouse Pier, Penzance on her afternoon sailing from Hugh Town, St. Mary's on May 13, 2006. Close examination of her forward cargo space will reveal pilot gigs being carried on her hatch covers.

The Isles of Scilly Steamship Company is looking to replace both the Appledore built SCILLONIAN III and the former Norwegian freighter GRY MARITHA by the end of the decade with a single passenger-cargo ship as part of a £39m partnership package involving local councils aimed at improve transport links between Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly as well as enhancing port facilities at Penzance and Hugh Town.
