Photographs © John H. Luxton 2007

On the afternoon of Sunday July 29 Trafalgar Class submarine HMS TRENCHANT (S69) could be seen circling just seaward of Plymouth Breakwater. She was first noted at around 12:30 from the Hoe and was still conducting manoeuvres when the PONT-AVEN passed by at around 16:20. On Tuesday morning (above right) she was at a berth at the HMS Drake maintenance base at Devonport.

HMS TRENCHANT was completed by Vickers Ship Building & Engineering Ltd in 1989. She has a displacement of 4,500 tons, measures 85m x 10m x 8m and has a speed of 30 knots when dived. She carries 5 torpedo tubes and is armed with Tomahawk Cruise Missiles. She is expected to be the longest serving member of her class with a decommissioning date of 2023.
