On the afternoon of Sunday July 29 Trafalgar Class
submarine HMS TRENCHANT (S69) could be seen circling just seaward of
Plymouth Breakwater. She was first noted at around 12:30 from the
Hoe and was still conducting
manoeuvres when the PONT-AVEN passed by at around 16:20. On Tuesday
morning (above right) she was at a berth at the HMS Drake
maintenance base at Devonport. HMS
TRENCHANT was completed by Vickers Ship Building & Engineering Ltd
in 1989. She has a displacement of 4,500 tons, measures 85m x 10m x
8m and has a speed of 30 knots when dived. She carries 5 torpedo
tubes and is armed with Tomahawk Cruise Missiles. She is expected to
be the longest serving member of her class with a decommissioning
date of 2023. |
